Soft Rooms constitutes the spatial framework for (dis)assemblies, an exhibition presented at the Rice University School of Architecture. Distributed across two levels, the installation comprises four thematically distinct yet spatially interconnected zones, deliberately arranged without hierarchical order. This non-linear organization eschews a predetermined sequence of engagement, inviting visitors to begin their experience from either the ground or upper level.

The exhibition articulates four conceptual trajectories—Social Resistance, Material Cultures, Other-than-Human Agency, and Experimental Preservation—which emerged from collaborative research undertaken in the ARCH 402 and 403 studios. These thematic strands are not treated as discrete or autonomous categories; rather, they are understood as overlapping domains of inquiry that resist reductive interpretation.

To demarcate the four zones, the exhibition employs translucent textile partitions—what we refer to as soft rooms—which delineate space without enforcing rigid boundaries. This strategy fosters visual and conceptual permeability, allowing exhibited works to be viewed not as isolated artifacts but as situated provocations within a broader discursive field.

Rather than presenting a collection of resolved projects, Soft Rooms assembles a series of speculative investigations—critical reflections that interrogate established disciplinary frameworks and propose alternative methodologies for architectural thought and practice.
