In 2023, Hyperlocal received a commission from a New York-based fashion designer to design her first physical retail space located in the Lower East Side of New York City.
The store is situated on the first floor of a historic 1910 brick and timber building, which currently serves as a residential complex. This retail space occupies a narrow area measuring 9’ by 40’, adjacent to a former pizza house that unfortunately burned down during the pandemic. Both spaces had remained vacant for several years. The floor paint, drywall, and the recessed ceiling have deteriorated, revealing the exposed brickwork and wooden beams.
We adopted an acupuncture approach when designing the new retail space, focusing only on essential interventions in specific areas. We chose to expose the wooden beams and some of the brickwork, utilizing wooden dowels and a pulley system for the racks. Given the limited space available, instead of installing drywalls as partitions, we introduced a curtain system with ceiling-mounted tracks to provide privacy as and when required.
